Photos From Louvre Museum!
The Museum was originally a defensive fortress and there are various versions of its name. According to the first one, it was named Louvre because of the place name of the area where it was built – it was called Loupara. It is thought that the area was so named because it had many wolves (in Latin lupus and the female, meaning wolf, in the vernacular of that time in France, was called lupara). Another version is that the name comes from the Saxon word lauer or lower, which in Greek is rendered as ‘fortified fortress’. A third version: from the phrase ‘L’oeuvre’ for the masterpiece, but this is not very likely, since the building is referred to as the Louvre as early as 1200, when there was still no collection in the fortress.
A visit to the Louvre is a must do when visiting Paris! Spend a morning to go all around and see its unique exhibits and collections from around the world! Of particular importance to us Greeks is the magnificent statue of Victory of Samothrace that adorns the staircase between the floors! Below is a series of photos of the interior and exterior of the Museum and is a small sample of the treasures you will find there!
