Top 10 Attractions To Do In Phuket!
Visit The Phuket Old Town
Once you arrive in Phuket, the first task is to visit Phuket’s Old Town and discover the island’s past. Colorful old Chinese-European style houses that looks like those antique houses you often see in countries like Malaysia and Singapore with a bit of a Phuket touch. There are so many tourist attractions and shops to see in Phuket Old Town, from interesting museums to places selling souvenirs. There are also great restaurants and unique cafes you can enjoy.
Phuket Old Town is not very big and it will not take more than half a day to see all the beautiful places in the area. The place can be explored at any time of the day, but if you are there on Sunday, a unique experience awaits you if you spend the night there. Every Sunday, the entire main street of Phuket’s Old Town turns into a busy open-air market full of street food stalls, local artists and shops selling cheap handicrafts and more.
Sunday Walking Street brings real life to Phuket’s peaceful Old Town with many people visiting, both locals and foreigners alike, all walking up and down the street, tasting all kinds of delicious street food! Thailand is known for its delicious street food but pay attention to where you buy from …! Phuket Sunday Walking Street starts at around 4 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. every Sunday. Everything here is sold at a lower price than if you bought it in restaurants.
Hiking To The Khao Rang
If you are looking for a nice view near Phuket Old Town to enjoy a nice sunset over the city, there is no better place than Khao Rang Viewpoint. Within walking distance of the old town, Khao Rang Viewpoint offers a great view where you can see up to the southeast coast of the island.
You can either walk up the Khao Rang Viewpoint from the Old Town which will take about 30 – 45 minutes one way or you can rent a motorcycle and ride to the viewpoint. I highly recommend you go up there an hour before sunset and spend some time there.
Once you arrive at Khao Rang Viewpoint, you will find some restaurants and shops where you can refresh your energy. Just watch out for the monkeys if you plan to buy something to eat …! They steal everything !!!
Khao Rang Viewpoint is also a great place to exercise, as you will find many locals hiking to the top every night to enjoy the sunset. It is one of my favorite places in Phuket Old Town and I highly recommend visiting the view before leaving Phuket Old Town and exploring other parts of the island.
Visit Wat Chalong
One of the oldest and most famous temples in Phuket, Wat Chalong is one of the most important parts of the island to visit. The temple is located southwest of Phuket Old Town and is easily accessible by motorcycle on your way to the coast. Inside the temple, you will find many stunning architectures as well as a huge pagoda where you can climb to see the view of the surrounding area.
You can spend about half an hour here, walking to the temple, checking out all the amazing ordination rooms and climbing to the top of the pagoda. From the top of the pagoda, you will be able to see the statue of the Great Buddha on top of the mountain, which we will head to next. The temple opens from 8 p.m. until 5 p.m. every day and like most temples in Thailand, you can enter for free.
Great Buddha is definitely the highlight of your visit to Phuket. The statue is 45 meters high and is located at the top of one of the highest points of view in the area where you can have a panoramic view of the entire southern coastal area of Phuket.
The route up there is quite steep and you should be able to get there on a rented moped just fine. There are some really steep sections, but the road is good enough! You will have no problem going up and down safely to the Great Buddha. Once you reach the top, you can park your moped in a designated parking lot and you will have to walk a bit to the platform and a bit more to the statue of the Great Buddha itself.
From the platform, you can see the entire south coast of Phuket with the beaches of Promthep Cape, Nai Harn and Rawai, all near you. You can even see Kata Beach from behind if you walk a little further on the other side of the platform.
You can get quite warm here, as there are not many natural shades, so be sure to wear your sunscreen when climbing here. The Statue of the Great Buddha opens from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day and admission is free.
Relax at Nai Harn Beach
Of course, if you go to Phuket, you have to visit one of its most pristine beaches! After traveling for a while in Phuket, we found Nai Harn Beach to be the best of all, achieving a balance between location and crowds. Patong Beach, which we will visit later, is by far the most popular beach in Phuket, with Kata Beach within walking distance, but this is accompanied by the hustle and bustle that some may not like. Nai Harn Beach, on the other hand, is as beautiful as other beaches with fine sand and plenty of space and facilities to relax and best of all it’s not overcrowded at all.
There are plenty of resorts, restaurants and cafes to make your life quite comfortable around Nai Harn Beach and its proximity to other tourist attractions in Phuket makes it a great place to stay while you are in Phuket. If you’re looking for a quiet and warm beach to sunbathe in Phuket, you can not go wrong with Nai Harn Beach. There are also lots attractions to visit near Nai Harn Beach and one of them is the Black Rock view, which we will discuss in the next section.
Hiking To Black Rock
Black Rock is an area with stunning view of Nai Harn Beach, where you can enjoy an unparalleled panoramic view of the entire south coast of Phuket, providing even better views of the Great Buddha statue. You will have an incredible view of Nai Harn Beach and Cape Promthep as well as all the other small islands around Phuket. It’s probably one of the best sights in Phuket and you should try it if you are in Nai Harn.
There are 2 ways you can get there. First, you need to ride your moped on a dirt road that leads to Black Rock and from there, you have 2 options. You can either walk about 2 km to the path to the Black Rock viewing point or you can hire one of the taxi drivers there to take you! The taxi will cost about 50 THB per person for one trip, 100 THB in total if you want the driver to be waiting for you.
TIP: Taxi prices in Thailand are very economical and for us it was one of the main ways of transportation!
Sunset At Krating Cape
Krating Cape is another area that offers great ocean view as well as a fun hike that will take you to a more remote part of the island. As the cape faces west, it is also one of the best places to watch the sunset over the ocean. When I was there, there was no one at the point of view except me and it was unbelievable!
To reach Krating Cape, you can continue and hike from Black Rock Viewpoint for another 1 km (about 1 hour) following the road until you reach the above junction and turn left.
The view from Krating Cape may not be as beautiful as the Black Rock Viewpoint, but if you are there before sunset, you will be completely alone. Just make sure you take some time to return, otherwise you will be hiking back at night, which is not recommended. Once finished, take the same return road and continue along the road for about 2 hours before reaching back of the taxi where you parked your moped. Many people, including me, often combine the Black Rock Viewpoint with the Krating Cape on a 5 mile hike that will take about 4 hours to complete. It’s a long walk, so make sure you have enough water with you before you start this trail.
Phuket, Thailand! The ultimate travel destination…!
Visit Promthep Cape
If you prefer a more accessible place to watch the sunset, Cape Promthep is another great place to be. It used to be one of the most beautiful sunset spots on the island, but from my recent experience, the place could be a little more tidy and clean as the tall dry grass covers most of the cape today.
However, it is a wonderful and easy place to visit and the place is extremely convenient with ample parking, restaurants, shops and toilets available on site. The place is very crowded at sunset, so be sure to come early and find the best spot for the sunset before the crowd arrives here.
If you want to take your trip to the next level, you can also watch the sunset at Cape Promthep on a boat, which, in my opinion, is the right way to do it. You can book a sunset cruise on Promthep Cape, which includes snorkelling and dinner.
There is a reason why Patong Beach is the most popular beach in Phuket. The large, spacious white sand beach, which is soft to the touch, is difficult to overcome and there are fewer people now than before, so if you want to see Patong Beach properly, this is the time.
Soi Bangla is still as bad as it once was, so I would recommend spending as little time there as possible and focusing more on beach activities. I would recommend spending just one day in Patong and spending your time elsewhere.
Explore Other Nearby Islands
Last but not least, make sure you spend a day or two on the island and just take boat trips to other nearby islands such as the famous Phi Phi Island, James Bond Island or lesser known islands such as Racha and Coral Island. All these islands are worth a visit if you have a few extra days and there is no better place to do it than Phuket.
So Phuket …! Thailand…! Let’s go and see the top attractions of this popular island!!!
